Writing to Improve Exercise Habits: Why It’s a Heavy Lift

Sufficient physical activity (PA) is crucial to improving and maintaining health. But most people in the United States do not participate in PA at levels recommended by national bodies. Many underrecognized determinants influence PA habits, including demographic, health-related, psychosocial, and societal factors. Furthermore, these determinants apply unequally across demographic subgroups in the United States. Medical writers assume an important responsibility in disseminating accurate information on PA and exercise well-targeted to their audiences. Greater recognition of the determinants of PA participation could enhance the impact of their work. Writers who address exercise barriers and enablers for targeted audiences may help improve equity in exercise participation.
