Continuing medical education (CME) and continuing education (CE), which are required to maintain licensing and board certification, are considered beneficial by some clinicians and a necessary evil by others. In reality, CME/CE ultimately aims to ensure that clinicians are up to date with the latest medical advancements and able to provide high-quality patient care.
Despite the importance of CME/CE in health care, not much is known by clinicians or the overall medical writing community about the nuances of the CME/CE planning and delivery process. Resources specifically for medical writers who specialize in CME/CE are limited. Alexandra Howson, PhD, an established freelance CME writer, fills this gap for CME writers, whom she describes as the “hidden labor in the CME/CE world,” in her new book WriteCME Roadmap: How to Thrive in Continuing Medical Education with No Experience, No Network, and No Clue.
