Bad writers choose the wrong words, and they put their words in the wrong order. Fortunately, both problems are easy to solve. To help people choose the right words, I teach them how to use a dictionary and a thesaurus. To help people solve problems with word order, I teach them how to recognize the 8 parts of speech and how to diagram sentences. Once they can visualize sentence structure, I give them a few pointers on word order. This article explains the valuable lessons hiding in your dictionary and introduces the Reed-Kellogg approach to sentence diagramming.
