Dear AMWA community,
It is a privilege and an honor to be selected to be your next President. In a tale that likely resonates with many, I didn’t set out to be a medical communicator, and I certainly never imagined I would one day be serving as President at AMWA. When I took my first role as a medical writer at the health care company where I still work now, I was the only person doing that type of work among a sea of clinicians and hospital operators. Finding AMWA was like finding a life raft. Not only did I find a way to learn the skills I needed, but I also found a wonderful community that could provide support, commiseration, and friendship. I’ve been an AMWA member for 15 years, but it feels like it was just yesterday that I was starting my career and wondering where the journey might take me. As I reflect on my trajectory with AMWA, I can’t help but think of all those who came before and supported me to this point. And, in being true to my tendency toward overthinking, I can’t help but ponder about the history of AMWA itself. Is it true that “what’s past is prologue”? If so, how has where we have been as a community led us to where we are today, and how might that shape where we go from here?
